Meet Yakir Hexter Hy”d
Yeshivas Yakir Li proudly bears the name of Yakir Hexter.
Below are words prepared by his father.
Yakir Hexter, the beloved first-born son of Josh and Chaya Hexter, was an extraordinary young man whose life, though tragically cut short, was filled with purpose, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to Torah values and service to others. Born in Israel, Yakir's journey was one of continuous growth, learning, and giving, marked by his infectious smile and ability to bring light to even the darkest moments.

From his earliest days, Yakir embraced the responsibilities and joys of being the eldest child, setting an example for his siblings and peers alike. His path of excellence began at Horev High School, where he laid the foundation for his future accomplishments. After graduation, he embarked on a journey that beautifully balanced Torah study with service to his country by enrolling in Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush) as part of the Hesder Program, a unique five-year track that combines intensive Torah study with military service.

During his time in the Israel Defense Forces, Yakir served with distinction in the combat engineers unit. His dedication, skills, and leadership qualities were integrated as he became a unit commander. Yakir's service was characterized not just by his tactical abilities, but by his unique capacity to inspire and uplift those around him, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Upon returning to yeshiva, Yakir's thirst for Torah knowledge only intensified. He pursued semicha and successfully passed the Rabbanut exam in the laws of Shabbat. His commitment to Torah study remained unwavering even as he pursued other academic interests. As a student of architecture at Ariel University, Yakir found a perfect outlet for his artistic abilities and mathematical acumen. This unique combination of skills allowed him to excel in a field that demands both creativity and precision, showcasing his versatility and wide-ranging interests.

Despite his rigorous academic studies, Yakir always found time for Torah learning and for others. His dedication to learning was evident in his daily chavrusa in Gemara, where he completed many mesechtot, and his weekly chavrusa studying Reb Chaim's commentary on the Rambam. Even while juggling his other commitments, Yakir was preparing to take the Rabbanut exam in the laws of Niddah, demonstrating his commitment to Torah learning.

Yakir was known as "everyone's best friend," a testament to his warmth and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His commitment to helping others extended to formal volunteer work with Israel's Big Brother program and involvement in the student village on campus. Yakir's ability to balance his personal growth with selfless giving was a hallmark of his character.

Yakir's serious pursuits were beautifully balanced by his love for life's joys. He was an avid hiker who cherished time spent in nature with friends. His passion for cooking gourmet meals and crafting fancy drinks showcased his creativity and love for bringing people together. These interests reflected Yakir's belief in living life to its fullest and finding beauty in every moment.

On October 7th, 2023 (Simchat Torah), when Israel came under attack from Hamas terrorists, Yakir didn't hesitate to answer the call to serve. He joined his elite reserve unit (551) and spent months in Gaza, clearing booby-trapped buildings and tunnels. Tragically, on January 8, 2024 (כ"ז טבת תשפ"ד), Yakir and his longtime friend and chavrusa, David Shwartz z"l, were killed when a Hamas RPG was fired into a building they were clearing in Khan Yunis.

Yakir's life was characterized not just by his achievements, but by the way he approached every challenge with a smile and an indomitable spirit. His army commander in Gaza, Ron Katz, shared a poignant memory that captures the essence of Yakir's impact:

I remember how in the hike out of Sajaiya at four in the morning after having walked over eight kilometres with our bags on our backs, when we were broken, you found me, walked alongside me, looked at me in the eyes, and through your cheeky smile, asked “Ron, what happened to your smile?” That very simple question that was so natural to you, changed that painful night to an experience from which arose one of the most beautiful dawns I have ever seen, and it is thanks to you that I appreciated it.

This anecdote exemplifies Yakir's extraordinary ability to transform difficult situations through his positivity and care for others. Even in the most challenging circumstances, Yakir found a way to uplift those around him, reminding them to find joy and beauty in every moment.

Yakir's approach to life – facing challenges with a smile and unwavering optimism – serves as the cornerstone for Yeshivas Yakir Li. The school's aim is to instil in the students this same resilient spirit and positive outlook that Yakir embodied. The school's mission is to nurture young minds who, like Yakir, will approach challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, use their smiles and positivity to uplift others, find beauty and appreciation in every experience, combine a deep commitment to Torah values with a joyful approach to life, and strive to make a positive impact on their community and the world around them.

As we remember Yakir Hexter – a beloved son, grandson, brother, friend, and defender of Israel – we are inspired to carry forward his legacy of optimism, kindness, and resilience. Yeshivas Yakir Li stands as a living testament to these values, aiming to nurture a generation of students who will face life's challenges with the same bright smile and indomitable spirit that Yakir showed throughout his life.
